Laura Cooksey

As a 5 year old who found herself at a church Christmas musical audition, Laura Cooksey quickly came to the realization that she wanted to spend the rest of her life singing and dreamt of being an artist like her childhood favorites, Amy Grant and Sandi Patty.  At that time she had no idea that her Heavenly Father was paying such close attention, just waiting for the time and opportunity to make each dream come true, and to do much more.

From her childhood in Atlanta, Laura’s musical course was clear and she moved through it with excitement and determination. She performed in church and musical theater productions as a child and into high school, then went on to study vocal performance at Baylor University, where she won several prestigious music awards and received a Bachelor’s of Music.

Prior to graduation at Baylor, Laura and a few of her friends formed a Christian vocal group, birthed out of an early morning college bible study. The group was called Sign of Jonah and consisted of four members who spent five years touring together and leading worship in churches and youth events across the country. It was during her travels with Sign of Jonah that Laura began to sense and ultimately accept the calling of music ministry on her life. “The Lord really used that time in my life to confirm that my calling was to sing for Him and to share the gift He entrusted me with people who needed to be reminded or even told for the very first time that God loves them.” Toward the end of the group’s tenure, they relocated their ministry from Texas to Nashville, Tennessee, where the Lord began to establish Laura’s steps to confirm the calling of ministry she submitted to several years earlier.

Since living in Nashville, Laura Cooksey has had the opportunity to provide backing vocals on several award-winning albums, and to sing with numerous recording artists, including Mandisa, Natalie Grant, and Nicole C. Mullen. She has also served as a worship leader for several national conferences, including the E Women and Women of Faith tours. She’s even had the opportunity to fulfil a childhood dream of singing for Disney.

In 2011, she was chosen to record a new theme song for Disney, titled “The Magic, Memories and You,” which is now played nightly on Cinderella’s Castle in Disney World and on the It’s a Small World pavilion in Disneyland theme park.

As Laura continues to move forward in pursuing Christ and the calling He has on her life, she is excited to have begun work on her first solo project that is set for a January 2012 release. The project will contain a blend of original music and familiar worship tunes and hymns. Laura’s prayer is that this project will communicate her point of view as an artist, but even more importantly, she prays it will be an encouragement and a reminder of His love and faithfulness to all who hear it.

When not on the road, Laura enjoys spending time at home, cooking and baking for her college sweetheart and husband, Kyle Cooksey, as well as spending time with their golden retriever, Dixie, in Franklin, Tennessee.
